Zadik rode his bike completely on his own without training wheels today. I took off his training wheels earlier this week. We spent two evenings working on riding without them, and Zadik was doing okay, but he wasn't quite getting it. He could keep his balance for a little while, but then he would stop pedaling and fall over. He also had to have me hold him up every time he wanted to start.
Tonight we took all our bikes to a local walking/bike trail. Alise and I took off riding fast, and Zadik felt left out. Jenny told him that he could ride with us as soon as he learned to keep pedaling and start all by himself. That was all the motivation he needed. Within about 5 minutes he was starting and riding completely on his own. He even tried to have a race with Alise. That part was pretty funny. He started pedaling as fast as he could, then his feet flew off the pedals. He looked down to try to get his feet back on the pedals, thereby taking his eyes off the trail. He immediately started weaving back and forth violently. When he realized he was about to crash, he looked up again and regained his balance. About 5 feet later though, he went off the side of the trail and biffed it.
